Road markings

The term "road markings" covers all types of markings used on roads. We distinguish between horizontal markings and vertical markings: vertical markings include all traffic symbols and upright markings.

The horizontal markings consist of all types of line markings applied to the surface of the road. We use two different types of materials for such markings: thermoplastic paint and water-based road paint.

Thermoplastic paint
This is a stronger and more wear-resistant hot-melt paint, applied to heavily trafficked roads at a temperature of 190 - 210 °C. It can be applied by various types of equipment and in a range of colours.

Road markings can be applied with various types of equipment:
- by mechanical extrusion (curtain application)
- by spray painting machine
- by hand
- in the form of prefabricated symbols

Water-based road paint
This paint is used on less heavily trafficked roads, or for markings not exposed to hard wear. It can be applied by hand spray or by machine. High-pressure airless spraying equipment has recently been introduced, assisting the work and improving the quality of the markings.

A new requirement in respect of road markings applies to their performance in the wet. We have met this requirement in the form of the UWR system of structured markings, jointly developed with the Norwegian Trysil Maskin A/S machine manufacturer.
